You know you need traffic to your website. People are telling you how to generate that traffic. But, they aren’t telling you everything about traffic. See, not all website traffic is created equally. Some traffic is good for a website and some can actually be bad. That is right. Some traffic is bad.
You are wondering how traffic could possibly be bad for a website aren’t you? A lot of you are making sites that are monetized using the Google Adsense program. You build sites about specific niches in hopes that these people will click on advertisements so that you can get paid. Unless you are a really experienced Adsense person, you are probably actually hurting yourself by just driving as much traffic as possible to your site.
Google cares about conversions for their advertisers. If the traffic that you are sending them through your clicks doesn’t convert well for the advertiser, then you can bet that someone is going to notice. Traffic that doesn’t convert into sales is a waste of money for the advertisers. You need to send them people who are actually going to buy the products and services they are selling. That is where the money is. How does this apply to traffic? Let me tell you.
Traffic from certain sources is notorious for poor conversions, especially for Adsense. One example is social traffic. If people are finding your Adsense monetized website from places like Facebook, Twitter or Digg.com, those people are actually lowering your CTR. Google really cares about CTR. That is a general measurement of the quality of the traffic as far as their advertisers are concerned. The more traffic you get from social marketing, the lower your CTR will go. And you thought that traffic was good.
You don’t want these social visitors to even see your Adsense ads. You want to show Adsense ads to people who arrive at your website from the search engine results pages. Those people are far more likely to click on your advertisements because they are actually interested in what you are talking about. That kind of traffic will increase the click through rate on your website. As your CTR goes higher both Google and experienced Google advertisers will take notice. They will realize that traffic from your website to their advertisers is more profitable than the typical website’s traffic.
You can even take this to another level by analyzing the specific keyword phrases that people are arriving at your website from. Analyze those keywords to tell if they are clicking on ads. If you have a certain keyword that brings in lots of traffic that never clicks ads, then you should probably stop showing those Google ads to that traffic. How do you do this?
There are software programs out there that will allow you to very clearly specify who sees the Adsense advertisements and who doesn’t. If you are building sites for Adsense then you had better learn how to use these programs properly or else quit generating traffic from social media resources. That social media traffic is actually hurting you.
Now is probably a good time for you to stop and think about how you have monetized the traffic on your websites. Have you properly considered which visitors you are making money from? For just about any niche website, the best traffic is organic search engine traffic. That is what you should spend your time focusing on.
