Some really good tips for blog owners there. I myself owning about 5 blogs discovered a few things I didn't know. Its amazing how some people are naturally so good at blogging. I mean everyone can write but some people just have something "magical" in their posts haha.

Thanks for the link!

I usually just laugh and go on, while saying “what a pathetic excuse for a monetized domain,” but I can easily see where this could really aggravate the hard working writers out there.

Wow! I just read your post over at HubPages about the "Write for Us" options and/or how to find work from home, and seen a rather long list of random sites with a lot technical discrepancies and special requirements to do such things. This may be a great way to make money from home if the genres happen to fall within one of your fields of interest and know-how, but for the typical writer, having your own blogs/domains/websites and perhaps surfing the well-established freelance boards for jobs or writing for article-submit sites (sort of like HubPages - even though I'd rather not ) may be a better option for the majority of people who are out there looking for ways to monetize and capitalize on their amazing ability to type on a keypad while being semi-coherent during the process (ha-ha!).

At any rate, that was quite some list; I only visited the first few links on that page, but I may go back later on just to checkout some more of these "work from home" / "write for us" options that you provided.

By the way, I have a question for anyone that knows for sure: I couldn't help but notice 5 Google AdSense blocks of Adverts per page at HubPages. I thought that publishers were only allowed 3 blocks of Google Ads per post or page? Even Blogger.com only permits 3 blocks, but I could have sworn I have read about this before, with other websites and whatnot. Then again, I've noticed the same thing at other article-submit websites like "Ezine Articles," for example, as they have long strips of Google Ad units all over the freakin' place. Are the rules different for big websites like that or am I missing something obvious and need to go re-evaluate the AdSense TOS? I'm ~confused~ now...

Cheers!

I must shuffle through all those banners and ads while attempting to find the content. Sometimes, the webmaster tricks me into thinking that I’ve found a link to the content I am looking for, but then I realize I’ve just clicked on an ad. Whenever I experience this, I make sure I never visit that site again.

Yeah, it gets old running across all the scraper sites, article spinning baloney, along with the websites that look like an advert depot from deep within India's build-a-blog-a-day blogging sweatshops.
I usually just laugh and go on, while saying "what a pathetic excuse for a monetized domain," but I can easily see where this could really aggravate the hard working writers out there.

All of these bad practices with profit are typically short lived, and they either have to find new domains to spam out or eventually end up being the ones looking for PPC revenue from other sources outside of Google.
For example, if some of those spammy "publishers" (I hate to call those lazy, grammatically challenged retards "publishers," but whatever) get shitcanned by Google AdSense, then there is a good chance they will have AdBrite adverts or another advertising service up and running in no time at all, that has a less strict TOS agreement.

Anyway, I'm like a lot of people and prefer Google AdSense over the others because it seems to be the best overall, but opinions do vary from person to person. Cheers!

I agree that spinning articles is manipulative and is bad practice for any serious web publisher.

I agree with this article that it all comes down to the user experience. Content must be high quality and original. Google Adsense ads should not be dominating above the fold, because nobody visits any page to simply view ads. We all visit web pages to receive information about whatever we are searching for. Ads are a "possible" secondary option for us, once we've completed reading or scanning the page.

Ads are never a visitors focus, and they shouldn't be from a design perspective.

Personally, I cannot stand those websites where I must shuffle through all those banners and ads while attempting to find the content. Sometimes, the webmaster tricks me into thinking that I've found a link to the content I am looking for, but then I realize I've just clicked on an ad. Whenever I experience this, I make sure I never visit that site again. No matter how great the "hard to find" content may be.

People don't want to be straining their eyes or focusing all their attention just to find the content they're looking for. They want it to be easily accessible.

These adsense bad practices are equivalent to being asked to pay up front prior to entering a store to browse around. It's repulsive.

I have tried in the past to do guest posts because plenty of people extoll the virtues, but I have enough trouble finding topics for my own blog as it is - I go through periods of lacking inspiration, so I try to save my topics for those dry spells. Not the best bet, but it happens.

Anyways, if it were more concrete and proven then I might try it, but until then, I'll stick with other methods of building traffic...

You made a really good point in your article "Is Guest Blogging Really All That Powerful," when you mentioned how the quality standards and human review factors are greater on blogs that allow guest blogging, as opposed to the typical article-submit sites and/or content farms (as they call it now).
Yeah, there are many tactics that you can use to achieve higher search rank, but I think that a lot of people would do even better in search ranks if they put as much effort into their own domains as they do others. I'm someone to talk, since it is not uncommon for me to go to other blogs and type comments longer than the original post itself... Ha-ha!

But seriously, even though it seems to work for some, guest blogging isn't for me. I like to be in control of my content, articles, blog posts, whatever, no matter if they are informative articles, entertaining web pages, or some silly video post from a free blogspot blog. What if some of the website owners you guest blog for, just sort of up and change their mind about what they want their site to be and delete a lot of the guest posts later on down the road? Even worse, what if they let their domain go, sell the site, and so on...? You never really know for sure what the plans are, unless it is your own site that you manage yourself.

After thinking about it, I changed my mind. I guest post all the time, uh, in the comment fields. Ha-ha! But when commenting on random blogs, at least it is not content that I wrote for somebody else that I could have used on my own website, as it is just merely a response to what somebody else already wrote. You see were I'm going with this?

Anyway, best of luck to all of ya who are typing your fingers to the bone while trying to get ahead in this Cyber rat race full of freelancers, marketers, entrepreneurs, spammers, etc. Hey, the holidays are approaching, and people ARE more click-happy during this time of year, which could equal more affiliate sales, PPC profits and whatnot; cheers! :D

The fact that Google chose to use blog commenting as a strong way of building a site's reputation goes to show that they stand behind their "Do No Evil" motto. In forcing people to look at others' blogs to get others to see theirs, Google is a strong driving force behind online communities. These "like minded bloggers" can really become true friends online.

I thought I would chime in on this as it is a topic near and dear to my heart. You have to remember that each of these article directories or content farms or whatever you want to call them has their place. A lot of people have made money on hubpages. At one point in time it was an easy thing to do because the hubs all ranked well due to the domain authority of the site.

A lot of people have gotten noticed because of an article or series of articles that they posted on EzineArticles.com. There are legitimate ways to use EzineArticles.com to drive traffic to your site. They might not be as desirable as they were before Panda, but they are slowly making a comeback.

In my personal opinion, the only thing really lacking at those sites is effective quality control. Both have been abused by people who are spamming and/or aren't even capable of writing decent English. That is the core of their problems.

Both of those sites started out being a huge asset to writers. Any site that provides the kinds of free benefits for people like those two sites do will become a major target for abuse. The people who are abusing those sites are not like us. They don't care if they destroy HP or EZA in the process of getting whatever benefit they can from them. They just don't care.

Kathleen, I feel your detestation, especially when it comes to the low quality content found at many of these article-submit sites along with the lack of a real sense of a "writer's community" and whatnot. I don't know much about EzineArticles.com through personal experience, but I know that a similar website known as "HubPages" sucks about as much as the latter, and that is by way of personal experience. Ha! In fact, I once wrote a semi-rant blog page about 'em, and you can find it here: http://perpendicularity.org/blog/hub-pages/
Basically, the point is, for good or bad, if you're talented and have what it takes, you're better off starting small and staying busy pumping all of your content into a domain that is yours and yours only.
However, it never hurts to experiment with free blog platforms like WordPress or Blogger.com Blogspots, etc., but never sell out for others (like Ezine, Hubpages, etc.) just to build up their site while wasting your time and getting pennies in the process. In all due respect, I think Google's Panda update nailed at least some of the problems, although I heard a few spam & scrapper sites still made it through the filter. But, in due time, these types of things usually work out... Be on guard and keep being original and never sell yourself short; cheers! :)

I have published a few articles on Ezine, and probably will never utilize them again - at least not for any sort of link building campaign.

There really isn't much of a sense of community, at least in my opinion. I also think that articles get "lost" in the abyss of similar articles. And, more importantly for anyone seeking to use Ezine to obtain articles for their site, many articles are poorly written.

Don't get me wrong, I don't think Ezine is all bad. If you write well, it can be a good place to get your articles re-published on sites that seek good writers.

This is something that I've also noticed over time, although I have experimented with small niche sites, as well. What the main focus here is about, is having a website with lots of informative pages that takes advantage of the SEO benefit from good internal linking.
Internal linking to pages within your own site using your desired anchor text, means a lot and can definitely have a positive impact on your ranking.

So yeah, in a way, building a larger site could have you ranking higher with less external links pointing back to your domain. It is also a great idea to attach a blog to your website, like you mentioned. However, it seems that more and more people's websites are 100% blog nowadays, but it doesn't hurt to have both formats going own within the same website, etc.

In contrast, if you do decide to build a smaller site instead of a larger one with lots of pages and internal linking, it seems that the small, on-topic, non-random niche sites do really good with a moderate amount of links pointing to it.
At any algorithmic rate, good luck with the search engine ranking and on-page optimization; cheers!

After following the provided link and reading your post, I'm glad to see that you're a motivated writer with goals. Many bloggers just blog for fun, of course, but the ones who utilize the act of blogging for a possible stream of income via affiliate marketing, PPC advert revenue, etc., really need to set goals and try to maintain that level of motivation.

Some folks get burned out or come down with what they call "writer's block" and whatnot, while many successful website owners have a plan that works by way of organization, a steady schedule, and a goal to achieve a certain level of traffic and monetary rewards.

Personally, I like to build one website or blog at a time. I like using paid domains and free blogging platforms. The end result equals a conjunction of websites that act sort of like an SEO network that interlinks one blog to the next, and so on.
I like having niche blogs and random websites, as variety and diversity means a lot when trying to gain loads of traffic via multiple small-to-medium websites.

At any literary rate, no matter what your goal is, have fun blogging and remember how easy it is for bloggers to help out other bloggers. If you're really into this type of stuff and would like to get known by more and more bloggers, guest posting would probably be a really good option for you. Cheers! ;)

The social media inclusion into the SEO world is a bit of a strain for me. I'm one of the weirdos, evidently, that doesn't see how on-page content and SEO relates to social media websites like FaceBook that "like" or "link" any random silly thing they come across. I mean really, just because people post links to stuff doesn't mean it is high-quality. In fact, some people post links to crap because it is just that, like, "hey, look at this stupid site."

I think social media will definitely have a little impact on ranking during the first wave or two, but after several black-hat SEO strategies start manipulating it for what it is, the good ol' "content is king" philosophy will start panning out once again, in full glory.

No matter what your strategy is, if you have a useful site full of informative and/or entertaining content, you will gain lots of traffic. However, good SEO will always speed up the process. If you just like to fool around and post random hogwash in hopes of getting an advert clicked, I'd just stick with blogspot blogs for that. I only get serious with my paid domains and I just play around with the free blogs, etc.

At any rate, good luck everybody! Freelance writing, pay-per-click profits, affiliate marketing, and all those other cyber-based related sources of income are tough, at times... Keep grinding through the competition, is all I can tell ya!

Implementing a social media in marketing program without optimizing content is leaving money on the table. Useful social content (blog, video, images, audio) that cannot be discovered via search is a lost opportunity to reach an audience that is looking.

Without a doubt social media is now important for SEO. There are different ways that you can accomplish top rankings. One of those ways is to get enough natural publicity from social media. Google simply cannot ignore when some piece of content is being promoted honestly due to its merit. They have to respond with higher rankings. It just makes sense.
